Whilst properties and even streets have already started to benefits from the wide-ranging advantages offered by closed-circuit television (CCTV), it looks like reliable CCTV will be integrated into more and more aspects of modern life. Along with public CCTV systems in London, all Metropolitan Police Service vehicles (and even many officers) are coming equipped with CCTV as well.

Mobile CCTV Systems In London

Around twenty-thousand officers are already in the process of receiving body-worn cameras and, soon, every police van will come equipped with the technology as well. The initial target is to ensure that at least one vehicle will be fitted with the new technology in every London borough within the coming months. The technology in question features no less than five cameras, three microphones and two monitors.

To date, somewhere in the region of 120 vehicles have been fitted out with these systems and the MPS has said that all future vehicles will come with the gear as standard. Recording with this software is automatic, with the recording starting as soon as the ignition is switched on. All data that the vehicles obtain is overwritten after 22 days, although it can be downloaded from the system itself and stored on a separate system for as long as is required.

Every police van that is used for the transport of police officers and detainees in London will now record, in high-quality video and audio, what occurs after the arrest has taken place.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said that “I made a promise that we would do this after concerns were raised by a number of bereaved families, including the family of Sean Rigg, who died in custody after he was conveyed in a police van to Brixton police station. The footage provided by these cameras will provide a great opportunity to increase our transparency and ensure we're doing our job properly".
